Sperrinview SEN School, Post-16 Student - Understanding Value

“We purchased the Maths For Life programme last year (2025) with the intention of introducing it to our Transition pupils aged 16–19, and it has proven to be an outstanding decision. From the outset, the support we received was excellent—every question we had prior to implementation was answered thoroughly, enabling us to begin the programme with confidence.

As a special school, finding a maths programme that effectively caters to a wide range of abilities has always been a challenge. Maths For Life has addressed this need exceptionally well. Its structured approach, combined with a broad range of resources and carefully designed assessment tools, allows every pupil to access learning at a level that is appropriate for them.

One of the most valuable aspects of the programme is its focus on real-life skills—particularly time and money—which are critical at this stage of our pupils’ development. The consistency in the design of the materials, regardless of ability level, has also been incredibly beneficial. This seemingly small detail has had a huge impact on pupil confidence and engagement, as learners feel included and supported, rather than singled out.

The impact on our pupils has been truly significant. For example, one student who previously had very little understanding of the value of money is now confidently managing a set budget. This progress has extended beyond the classroom, positively affecting their home life, where improved financial awareness is already leading to meaningful savings. The ongoing support has also been exceptional. A visit from Karen provided further insight into how the programme could be extended across different age groups, and as a result, we are now planning to roll this out throughout the entire school.

Overall, Maths For Life has delivered everything we hoped for and more. It is a comprehensive, inclusive, and highly effective programme that equips pupils with essential life skills while engaging them in meaningful learning. I cannot recommend it highly enough—it has truly transformed the way we teach functional maths and the outcomes our pupils achieve.”
